Four Ways to Save America

Episode Summary

Hawk lays out a four-point plan to restore and protect American democracy, starting the moment Democrats control the House, Senate, and White House after the 2028 election. The plan begins with nuking the filibuster and passing the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, restoring preclearance to Confederate states, ending partisan gerrymandering, and expanding voting access through same-day registration, automatic registration at 18, and mail-in ballots. Voter roll purges would be stopped cold.

Episode Notes

Next, Hawk calls for expanding the Supreme Court by four seats, drawing nominees from federal judges who held the line against the Trump administration, including Judge Boasberg. Ketanji Brown Jackson gets the nod for Chief Justice.

Puerto Rico and Washington DC become states, adding four new senators and giving millions of Americans real representation for the first time. Roe v. Wade gets codified into law nationwide. And critically, Hawk argues Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries must not lead the Senate or House, citing their stated loyalties to foreign interests over their own base. All four items fit on one piece of paper. Voting rights. Court reform. Statehood. Reproductive rights. That's the plan.

(00:01) Happy Monday. It's about 4:30 p.m. uh West Coast time. So, people have been asking me a lot. What can Democrats do to fix so many things? I am going to answer that question. I've thought about it for a couple of days and I came up with a list. I'm going to operate on the assumption that following the 2028 election that Democrats are in control of the House and the Senate and the office of the president.
(00:39) And I don't care what the margins are in the House or the Senate. Waving to my neighbors um who have no idea who I am. So, let's fast forward to like January 3rd, 2029. Democrats are in control of the Senate, Democrats are in control of the House, and we have a Democratic president. First three things right out of the gate.
(01:11) No Chuck Schumer as majority leader or similarly situated Apac Democrat. No Hakee Jeff as speaker of the House or similarly situated Apac Democrat in the Senate. The filibuster goes bye-bye. They nuke the filibuster. That is a must. First order of business in the House and the Senate is pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act that restores pre-clarance to Confederate states, requires them to give federal approval for any voting laws they want to pass that either intentionally or otherwise have racially discriminatory outcomes. same day voter
(01:57) registration, automatic voter registration when people turn 18, expands voting access, uh, and it prohibits nationwide. It prohibits all partisan gerrymandering for both sides. Voting should be the easiest thing that eligible Americans can do, and it should be free. They should be able to vote by mail. Voting should take place over a period of weeks and mailin ballots, as long as they're postmarked by midnight on election day, should be counted regardless of when they arrive.
(02:41) It also prevents these [ __ ] voter purges, uh, voter role purges that Republicans are doing in red states. That's the first piece of legislation that's passed. The second piece of legislation that's passed, expand the Supreme Court by four seats. Uh the president will nominate four sane, if not outright left-leaning justices. Uh I would I would suggest that that pool of candidates come from the DC uh district court, the trial court level and judges who have stood firm against the Trump administration over the last year and a half, such as Judge Boseberg
(03:28) uh in the Venezuelan immigrant case. Uh and he also handled much of uh I think he handled a chunk of the Kilmar Brigo Garcia case. There are dozens of judges to choose from who have upheld the law during the last 18 months. Um replace John Roberts's chief justice. The president can designate somebody else to be chief justice.
(03:57) Um, I humbly would propose Judge Katanji Brown Jackson be elevated to Chief Justice. She's been kicking ass. Uh, the things that she writes, the questions that she asks, I want to see her be Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court. Uh, lastly, because again, it's just like I've just been kind of thinking about this.
(04:21) There there are so many, many, many, many, many other things. These are kinds of protect democracy, protect representative democracy ideas that I've had. Second, or third, I guess, third on my list, Congress pass legislation making Puerto Rico and Washington DC states. Give them representation in the House of Representatives.
(04:45) Add four new senators to the United States Senate. Um, these are all things that they could get done within the first month or two of 2029. When I think about the House and the Senate and the President doing these things, it fires me up and I get motivated and I get excited given that the vast majority of current elected Democrats couldn't give two shits what their base wants.
(05:25) Would something like this plan happen? I am desperate for this plan to happen. It would fix slashreform the Supreme Court. It would fix and reform voting nationwide. It would nullify It would nullify the Supreme Court's last three decisions dismantling the Voting Rights Act. And I guess I would add number four to this list. Codify versus Roie Wade.
(05:54) Pass it as legislation nationwide. I think as I talk, nuke the filibuster, John Wright or excuse me, John Lewis Voting Rights Act, expand the court uh by four seats, replace John Roberts as chief justice, make Puerto Rico and Washington DC states. And it is critical, critical, critical that if Democrats control the House and the Senate in January of 2029, that Chuck Schumer not be named majority leader of the Senate and Hakee Jeff not be named Speaker of the House.
(06:36) They are beholden to foreign interests, as they have both stated on the record many, many, many, many, many, many, many times. and codify Row versus Wade nationwide. Those are just my first four ideas. Imagine the transformation from coast to coast of the United States of America. I fit it all on one tiny little piece of paper.
(07:16) One tiny little piece of paper. Nuke the filibuster, John Lewis Voting Rights Act, expand the court four seats, make Puerto Rico and Washington DC states, add four more senators, and codify Row versus Wade, and then we should pass a separate piece of legislation. Uh, it could be a resolution, I guess.
(07:41) It could be a resolution in the House and the Senate. Uh, and I would propose that we, well, actually, it would be two resolutions. Uh, it would be the Samuel Alo go [ __ ] yourself act and the Clarence Thomas go the [ __ ] home and get off the court and get back in your [ __ ] RV act. And then frankly, you know, I would work out if I were the president or if I were the leader in in the Senate or the speaker of the house and Democrats were doing all of these things, I would work out a deal with Budweiser that they deliver five cases of beer every single week
(08:31) to Brett Kavanaaugh's house. you know, and I know at least one of Amy Coney Barrett's children is black. They've adopted some kids. I think they have seven kids. I would also like there to be a PBS special uh where Amy Coney Barrett sits down with her adopted black daughter from another country and explains to her adopted black daughter why Amy Coney Barrett, her mother, voted to take away her reproductive rights and her voting rights in the United States.
(09:19) But that would just be kind of gravy, you know. And then we could also pass another resolution called the John Roberts is a racist act. But I'm getting ahead of myself a little bit. That's my list. Four things. four things that all fit on one small piece of paper that would completely transform democracy, voting, and the courts in the United States of America.
(09:58) Four
